Upgrade seafarers training institutions, expert tells FG

On this ‘Day of the seafarer,’ Marine Engineer, Kuzi Onyibe, has called on the Federal Government to ensure that the nation’s institutions concerned with the training of seafarers are upgraded to meet international standards.
Onyibe is a technical adviser with Phoenix, Register of Shipping.

In this special interview, Onyibe talks about training needs as a major challenges of the Nigerian seafarer

“Talking about the challenges of the Nigerian seafarer, we will start with the training, education, school.

There is a need for the country to support the institutions to ensure they are up to the standard to be able to train seafarers to the highest level and issue due certification; certifications that will allow them to work internationally; that will be recognised internationally.

Nowadays, it is not a matter of having your school; your school must be audited internationally, for them to be able to accept your certificate, not only being accepted in Nigeria, it must be accepted by international flags as well, because that is where you will go to work.

The ships in our flag have seriously diminished and we need to work outside Nigeria. That is a major thing, training and standards of seafarers coming out of this country. We need to work on it.”
